Jon Fitch hangt handschoenen aan de wilgen

John Fitch stopt met het wedstrijdvechten en hangt zijn handschoenen aan de wilgen. De 42-jarige vechter sloot zijn loopbaan afgelopen weekend af met een verliespartij tegen Neiman Gracie tijdens Bellator 246 in Uncasville, Connecticut. daarmee stopt zijn record bij 32-8-2 (1).

Fitch begon zijn loopbaan in 2002 bij de promoties Revolution Fighting Championship en MMA – Cuando Hierve la Sangre. Met verschillende overwinningen kwam hij in 2005 binnen bij de Ultimate Fighting Championship. Hier heeft hij tegen namen als Diego Sanchez, Georges St-Pierre, B.J. Penn en Demian Maia gestaan. Vervolgens stapte hij over naar de WSOF waar hij zeven partij vocht. Na de overstap van de PFL eindigde hij bij Bellator MMA. Hier vocht hij drie partijen op hoog niveau. Hij won van Paul Daley, kreeg een draw tegen Rory MacDonald en verloor recent van Neiman Gracie.

De Amerikaanse Fitch was zeker geen onbekende bij de fans. Hij maakt deel uit van de vechtsportgeschiedenis en is een echte pionier in de sport. Hij sprak met MMA Junkie over zijn besluit: “I’m having fun, but at the same time, the body doesn’t react the way I want it to anymore, the recovery’s not quite the same. The two biggest moments were the GSP fight and when I got to fight in Brazil, just because of the whole, everything around those fights, the buildup, the title fight, everything was amazing,” said Fitch, who never missed weight in his 18-year career. “The World Series of Fighting title fight, fighting Jake Shields in Madison Square Garden, that fight was amazing, just a list of hits.”

Last time making the walk. Most will never know the feeling. I will cherish these memories forever. This won’t be the last time you see me. Just the last time you see me fighting another grown man in my underwear.
