Martin Nguyen eert overleden vader na ONE Championship Featherweight titel winst

De Australiër van Vietnamese komaf Martin Nguyen wist afgelopen Vrijdag in Maleisië de Featherweight Titel in de ONE Championship organisatie te veroveren. De vechter die uitkomt voor KMA Top Team uit Liverpool, South Wales, Australië ging het gevecht tegen de ongeslagen Marat Gafurov in als underdog, maar wist uiteindelijk via KO in de tweede ronde een grootse overwinning te pakken.

Nguyen vocht twee jaar geleden (destijds voor de Interim titel) ook al tegen Gafurov. Destijds was de Rus via Rear Naked Choke Submission binnen één minuut de winnaar. ”The Situ-Asian” werkte zich met vier overwinningen (die allemaal beslist werden in de eerste ronde) terug op tot de nieuwe topcontender in de divisie. Uiteindelijk met een titelgevecht, en afgelopen Vrijdag met de titeloverwinning tot gevolg.

Nguyen wist Gafurov na een zwakke lowkick van de Rus met een perfecte rechterstoot naar het canvas te krijgen. Hiermee revancheerde Nguyen zich voor het enige verlies tot dusver in zijn carrière, en belangrijker hij pakte de ONE Championship Featherweight titel.

Dit was de reactie van de kersverse kampioen na afloop.
“I just want to dedicate this fight, not only to Malaysia for being so welcoming and having such a beautiful country. This is for my dad. He was my inspiration for the whole camp when I mentally broke. (He and) the boys kept me together. I’ve got a deadly overhand right, but it’s not my only weapon. Thank you to Marat [Gafurov] for giving me the opportunity.”

Bij thuiskomst was dan ook het eerste wat Nguyen deed, het graf van zijn overleden vader opzoeken.

Overigens lijkt een zogeheten rubbermatch tussen beide mannen een kwestie van tijd. Het staat op dit moment 1-1 tussen Nguyen en Gafurov. Beide mannen hebben elkaar als enige verlies op hun record staan.
