Dominick Cruz als back-up voor Garbrandt vs. Dillashaw

Cody Garbrandt bezorgde Dominick Cruz zijn eerste nederlaag sinds acht jaar. De titeluitdager wist de technieken van Cruz juist te beantwoorden en slaagde erin om de jury te overtuigen de sterkste te zijn. Ruim driekwart jaar later wordt het goud van de UFC Bantamweight divisie opnieuw op het canvas geplaatst. De atleten Cody Garbrandt en TJ Dillashaw zullen hierom strijden. Mag er een blessure roet in het eten gooien, dan staat Cruz vooraan om in te vallen.

Cruz was als gast bij UFC Unfiltered en vertelde hier over het evenement UFC 217 en zijn toekomstplannen: “I gave Cody that shot when I could’ve fought T.J. again. I have been doing this to build the division. I brought another guy up and fought him for the title because I wanted another guy in the mix. We needed that for the division. If any one of these guys gets hurt I would like to slide in and challenge for the title, 100-percent,”

Echter verwacht Cruz geen uitvallende vechter. “I don’t think either one of these two guys are going to pull out of that card, because of what I said about the pay-per-views and all that stuff. I think they will be there. And I hope they are so they can go out and get that fight done, I think it will be a fun fight regardless.”

Cruz wist de titel weer terug te veroveren na het winnen van TJ Dillashaw tijdens UFC Fight Night: Dillashaw vs. Cruz. Cruz heeft ook zijn titel verdedigd tegen Urijah Faber tijdens UFC 199. Hij heeft momenteel geen gevecht in zijn agenda geschreven.
